DETAILS OF STEP TWO

STEP THREE Painting the Bridge at Ronda

I began adding darker values, especially in the cast shadows. I used the same colors mentioned in Step Two, but with mixtures that had more pigment, and I let the complements (opposites) gray and darken each other. For example, the cast shadows on the faces of the cliff rocks were still mixed from Raw Sienna, Scarlet Lake and Manganese Blue, but I used more of each color’s pigment in relation to the amount of water, and I let the cool of the blue dominate.

The same procedure was employed in painting the warmer cast shadows under the bridge’s large arches, except that the reds and yellows dominate. The two details at right show more clearly how this was done, and how the darks were added while the lights were saved.
